During the past few weeks, I have been reading some of Pastor Leo Harris sermons. For many of us we never had the privilege to sit under Pastor Leo’s ministry. But we are blessed to have many of his messages in print to read and they are inspiring!
Below I thought it would be a great idea to share some of his thoughts so you can be encouraged as I have been. I have taken an excerpt from Pastor Leo Harris sermon “The Torments of Fear and How God Sets You Free”.
This message is based on 1 Timothy 1:7 and as Pastor Leo said as he started preaching this message: “This is one of the most dynamic, power-packed verses in the Bible. It has the ability to change the entire course of a person’s life.”
The bible verses in this except have been changed from the King James Version to the New King James Version for easier reading.
Be filled with the Spirit of God!
Pastor Leo Harris
Yes, we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God does a work in our lives when we are born again, but we need to receive the fullness. We need to be filled and keep filled with the Holy Spirit. This is a great insurance against fear.
Our text says, ‘For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.’ (1 Timothy 1:7)
Let us examine these three characteristics of the Spirit of God. We’ll reverse the order given here:
1. A Sound Mind.
Fear robs one of a sound mind. We are not of a sound mind when we are afraid, when fear torments us. We are often driven by fear to the most unreasonable things and say utterly irrational things.
But the Holy Spirit brings a mental soundness and stability. The Holy Spirit leads us to the Word of God, enlightens us, brings peace and harmony into our lives.
2. A Spirit of Love.
Fear destroys love, but, as we read in 1 John 4:18, ‘…perfect love casts out fear…’. When we love God, love God’s people, love His creation and love our enemies, we have no room for fear. We are masters. We are more than conquerors. The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts.
How often we find that unforgiveness, resentment, criticism of others, harshness, jealousy and similar distempers of life are born out of an inward, deep-seated fear.
When the love of God is brought into our lives by the Holy Spirit, all fear is cast out, and our resentments, bitternesses, criticisms and having lost their parent—fear—just die a natural death!
Friends, let the Spirit of God fill your life. Let the love of God be turned loose in your heart!
3. A Spirit of Power.
There is no real power in a life bound by fear; that is no power of God. God’s Holy Spirit gives power, courage, boldness!
‘…you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…’ Acts 1:8
God wants you to be endued with power from on high. He wants to give your life a new dynamic. He wants you to be super-charged with the energy of His Holy Spirit.
The opposites of fear.
A sound mind! Love and power! These are the characteristics of the Holy Spirit. These, too, are the opposites of fear.
These three represent wholeness and soundness in every respect:
Mental soundness: wisdom, understanding, knowledge, intelligence.
Love: a wholesome emotional life.
Power: strength, energy, action.
These three express a balance, poised, sound, God-like life. Lacking any one of the three, our lives are thrown into confusion and are unbalanced.
Mental soundness, wisdom knowledge – but without love and power – can lead to pride.
Love – without wisdom and power – leads to sentimentality and instability.
Power – without wisdom and love – can lead to oppression and tyranny.
God has all three. Man needs all three. The Holy Spirit brings all three into our lives. A sound mind, love and power. A spiritual maturity. A balanced, poised victorious, useful life.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7
I do hope you are encouraged with these timeless words and whatever you are going through allow the Holy Spirit into your life to experience His power, love and wisdom. As Pastor Leo said we need the Holy Spirit and there is an opportunity today for you to receive the fullness the Holy Spirit brings.
