Empowered by the Holy Spirit

Our seven-week series has been an empowering and encouraging time as we have focused on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. The question that we are left with is, ‘So what?’

What happens now? What do we do with the teaching and experiences that we have had? How will this change our lives?

When Jesus was giving instructions to the disciples just before He ascended back to the Father, it was like He was answering the ‘so what’ question. One of the final instructions Jesus gave is found in Acts 1.

Acts 1:8 (NIV)
8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

It is very easy to use this verse and instruction purely to support missions. There is this theme within this instruction: however there is something far more personal and intimate going on in Jesus’ words.

The disciples were told that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes. This was the mark of the deposit of God in us. The final act of God’s invitation for relationship. The Holy Spirit is our inclusion. We know what happened when the Holy Spirit came in Acts 2 (perhaps go back and read it in light of this verse in chapter 1). When we have the power of the Holy Spirit come into our lives, we are changed, things begin to shift. When we have an experience of the Spirit of God, we are never the same again.

Not only was there change within the disciples, it impacted those around them. Jesus said that when you are empowered by the Spirit, then you will be my witnesses. It is in the power of the Holy Spirit that we are to proclaim Jesus here, there and everywhere. People will see God in our lives and they will be drawn to Him by the power of the Holy Spirit within us.

The ‘so what’ that comes out of this series, is that if you have been empowered by the Holy Spirit during this time, then use it and share it. Don’t just keep it to yourself, display it. We have had a great time growing in the Spirit, being empowered by Him and we have been challenged.

Let me encourage you to be empowered by the Holy Spirit so that you can bear witness to our God and His Gospel.

In faith, hope and love
